When was the last time you read from the Torah or chanted a Haftorah? Your Bar or Bat Mitzvah? Whether that was a year or forty years ago, here’s your chance to sharpen your skills and join BIJ’s growing team of readers.
If you were with us on Shabbat morning, June 14, 2008, you enjoyed hearing students from Cantor Ellen Schwab’s cantillation class debut their new skills as they chanted sections (aliyot) of the Torah portion. This coming year, every fourth Saturday morning service will be a new Lay Leaders Shabbat. This will encourage members to increase their service participation and experiment with leadership in a supported environment.
The fourth Saturday is already set aside as our Special Invitation to Youth Shabbat, where our post Bar/t Mitzvahs can share their talents and pre-Bar/t Mitzvah students learn by example from all the Lay Leaders.
Space is available to read or to chant on all fourth Shabbat mornings throughout the summer and fall, and our student cantor David Morgenstern is available to coach you. Of course, if you want to read on a different Shabbat, scheduling is possible.
Please let the BIJ office know if you’re interested!
