As I sit looking out my window at wispy clouds on a beautiful spring day, I see that this coming Shabbat is “Shabbat Hachodesh,” the special Shabbat just before the month of Nissan begins. And the Haftorah for this Shabbat is from the last section of the Book of Ezekiel, who prophesied from exile in Babylon. He is envisioning a New Jerusalem, often interpreted not just as a physical return to the holy city, but as an ideal or spiritual synthesis. Ezekiel’s goal is not only to impart a sense of responsibility for individual actions, but to urge the people to live as members of a community. It is through that holy community that the Divine will be present, and that we can become “shalem” or whole.
Past – The response to the first Friday night “Shabbat Sacred Chant & Drum” was overwhelming! It was led by Rabbi Glazer, who was in top voice, as were our very own David Morganstern and Elie Aharon. Along with the drummers, they created an atmosphere that allowed us all to enter into an uplifting and inspirational space. Some songs took us into a pensive place, some were rousing, but all were moving! We had a lively Oneg Shabbat and were very pleased to welcome quite a few worshipers who had never been to BIJ before. Our members were clamoring for this to become a monthly event -- we are considering it, but for now, the next one is scheduled for May 30th -- mark your calendars!
Present – We want to know what you think! Are there changes you see that you like, or don’t like? Are there suggestions you’d like to make? Questions or concerns? As our goal is to make BIJ a more comfortable spiritual home for the entire community, we want to engage with you, the members. We now have an *inbox* in the office so you can leave us a note or mail a letter to the office to the attention of the Spiritual Practices Committee. Email address to follow, but please don’t wait. Let us know what you want and how you feel.
Future – The next holiday event that’s in the planning stages is the Tikkun Leyl Shavuot, Sunday, June 8. As mentioned in the last bulletin, we are planning a feast of traditional and non-traditional study and song, culminating with a big Musical Midnight Service. And beginning, of course, with blintzes, kugel and cheesecake! This will be a combined celebration with the Or Shalom Community and promises to be a lively evening, with something for everyone. Details will follow as we get closer. Oh, and please let us know if you would like to help with this event.
L’Shalom,
