Becoming a teenager is a natural part of growing older and bar/bat mitzvah is the Jewish way of marking and celebrating this transition.  Our ancestors recognized the shift from childhood to Jewish young adulthood as a time of increasing freedom and responsibility.  At this time the study of Torah (Jewish history, ethics, and spirituality) and mitzvot (sacred duties) are meant to help you make important decisions not only about what you believe, but also about the kind of person you wish to be in the world.
