Nancy Greenberg

I was born and grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. I was the typical “secular” Jew, celebrating the holidays, learning from my grandparents but never belonging to a synagogue. When my daughter attended Brandeis Hillel I realized it was important to belong to a synagogue, teach by example. After “shul shopping” I joined the friendliest and most welcoming synagogue, BIJ. I have been a member of BIJ for 20+ years. I taught 2nd grade in the Sunday School for 5 years. My daughter had her bat mitzvah and was confirmed here, I had my adult bat mitzvah here and Cantor Greenberg, of blessed memory, was our teacher and then we were married here, all on this bima.

I graduated from UC Berkeley in 1971, worked as a supervisor at Blue Cross and then became a manager of the graphic design department for Kaiser, California Casualty and US Leasing; went back to school to get my teaching credential. I taught for 21 years, 5th grade, 4th grade and 2nd grade for the San Mateo-Foster City School District. I was the teacher association President, a member of the Negotiating team and the Strategic Planning Committee. I have been on the BIJ Board of Trustees for 2 years and honored to be co-President with Deborah Schweizer.

Deborah Schweizer

The temple is like a member of my family and I want to do all I can to work towards its continued existence, which means so very much to me.

I grew up in Daly City, California, with my parents Ben and Ann Schweizer and sister Caren. My family has a long history with both Temple Beth Israel and Congregation Beth Israel Judea. My family belonged to Temple Beth Israel when it was located on Geary Street and I attended Sunday and Hebrew school on the campus located on Fourteenth Avenue. After living in the East Bay for a while, my family rejoined the now-merged Beth Israel Judea to join aunts, uncles and cousins who were BIJ congregants and have continued to be associated with BIJ since.

I am a graduate of UC Berkeley and New York Law School. I have been a trial lawyer for almost 30 years, running my own firm in San Francisco, the Schweizer Law Firm, and as a partner in the law firm Clapper, Patti, Schweizer & Mason in Sausalito, California.

I have served on the BIJ Board of Trustees for six years and have worked hard with my fellow trustees, Rabbi Gottlieb and the Temple Administrator, Sara Heckelman, to improve the financial stability of the temple while ensuring that BIJ continues to offer the full array of spiritual and educational programs that provide the opportunity for us all to foster friendships, forge meaningful connections and exercise and experience Tikkun Olam. In 2014-2015, I served as co-First Vice President with Nancy Greenberg and cotinued to chair the Development Committee and servce on the Executive Committee. I look forward to continuing to work together as Co-President on behalf of the BIJ Community that means so much to me.
